One technique for preventing unwanted pregnancy is to improve the quality of contraceptive counseling. In family planning care, we find components of relational and task-oriented communication that can help caregivers satisfy their patients’ needs. Working to create a close, trusting connection with patients and employing a shared decision-making strategy that focuses on soliciting and responding to patient preferences are two approaches to improving women’s contraceptive counseling experiences. Providing side effect counseling and implementing techniques to encourage contraceptive continuation and adherence can also help women get the most out of their contraceptives.
